Dance Ministry

The Bibilical Foundation of Dance

Many Christians in Scandinavia are still struggling with these thoughts: "Is dancing not, in fact, sin?" or "Is dancing in the church biblical?” If we are thinking along these lines, we have not read or understood the Bible on the subject. We must return to our roots, the Hebrew roots, to understand the biblical meaning of dance.

Dance in the church of God is biblical, but the opposition for it is from a tradition that was born without God. Tradition raises people's orders over the commandments of God. "In vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men" (Matt. 15:9). There are many different Hebrew words that describe dance to the glory of God in the Torah, in the Old Testament.

Hebrew words used for dance

Movement expressed with all these words can be called dance. The Bible encourages and gives us permission for it. The Bible is the Word of God, which means that He supports dance. We are the only restriction for ourselves.

1) CHIYL = circle, move around in circles, rotate The girls of Shiloh come out to join in the dancing…(Judg. 21:21)

2) MACHOWL = round dance You turned my wailing into dancing, you removed my sackcloth and clothed me with joy (Ps. 30:12). Again you will take up your tambourines and go out to dance with the joyful (Jer. 31:4b).

3) MECHOWLAH = Dance, a group of dancers…Who should come out to meet him but his daughter, dancing to the sound of tambourines (Judg. 11:34).Then Miriam the prophetess, Aaron’s sister, took a tambourine in her hand, and all the women followed her, with tambourines and dancing (Ex. 15:20).

4) DALAG = jump, run (out of joy, gladness) Listen! My lover! Look! Here he comes, leaping across the mountains, bounding over the hills. My lover is like a gazelle or a young stag (Song of Songs 2:8-9). Then will the lame leap like a deer and the mute tongue shout for joy (Is. 35:6).

5) CHAGAG = move in a circle, march in a religious procession, celebrate, feast dance => Feast of Tabernacles Then the survivors from all the nations that have attacked Jerusalem will go up year after year to worship the King, the Lord Almighty, and to celebrate the feast of Tabernacles. (Zech. 14:16, 18-19). …With shouts of joy and thanksgiving among the festive throng (Ps 42:4).

6) KARAR = dance, circle David danced before the Lord with all his might (2 Sam 6:14). Let them praise his name with dancing and make music to him with tambourine and harp (Ps 149:3). Praise him with tambourine and dancing; praise him with the strings and flute (Ps 150:4).

7) RAQAD = stamp, jump, dance, leap, bounce, spring As the ark of the covenant of the Lord was entering the city of David, Michal daughter of Saul watched from a window, and when she saw King David dancing and celebrating, she despised him in her heart (1 Chr 15:29). A time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance (Eccl. 3:4). Here also mourning and dancing are presented as opposites.

8) PAZAZ = jump, bounce, leap As the ark of the Lord was entering the City of David, Michal, daughter of Saul watched from a window. And when she saw King David leaping and dancing before the Lord, she despised him in her heart (2 Sam 6: 16). David’s wife Michal despised her husband’s dance before God and was therefore left barren. Judgment followed her contempt. Why? David’s dance was holy and pleased God. It was both God’s order and a joy to His heart. To touch something holy and consecrated to God with unholy thoughts and deeds brings judgment to one’s own life. Watch out for despising dance born of God and anointed by Him! Otherwise you risk remaining barren in your own life. God’s best may not take place, and you stay where you are without making progress in your spiritual growth. Instead, humble yourself under God’s order and see things correctly in the light of the Word.

9) GIYL /GUWL = circle around overwhelmed by feelings (delight) Let the heavens rejoice, let the earth be glad; let them say among the nations, “The Lord reigns!” (1 Chr 16:31). That I may declare your praises in the gates of the daughter of Zion and there rejoice in your salvation (Ps 9:14).

10) ALATS = jump of joy, be glad, rejoice But may the righteous be glad and rejoice before God; may they be happy and joyful (Ps 68:3). When the righteous triumph, there is great elation (Prov. 28:12).

Greek words used for dance

1) ORCHEOMAI = dance We played the flute for you and you did not dance (Mt 11:17).

2) CHOROS = round dance When he came near the house, he heard music and dancing (Lk 15:25).

3) AGALLIAO = jump of joy, rejoice greatly Let us rejoice and be glad and give him glory! For the wedding of the Lamb has come. (Rev. 19:7). Blessed are you when people insult, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven. (Mt 5:12).

4) SKIRTAO = jump of joy When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit (Lk 1:41). Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, because great is your reward in heaven (Lk 6:23).

Words used for praise

1) SCHACAH = worship, kneel down I and the boy go over there. We will worship and then we will come back to you (Gen. 22:5). Moses bowed to the ground at once and worshipped… (Ex. 34:8).

2) BARA = kneel down, bless So they all praised the Lord, the God of their fathers, they bowed low and fell prostrate before the Lord and their king (1 Chr 29:20). Then they bowed down and worshipped the Lord with their faces to the ground (Neh. 8:6).

3) HALLAL = praise, celebrate, Hallelujah! = praise the Lord! (originates from this root). He appointed some of the Levites to minister before the ark of the Lord, to make petition, to give thanks, and to praise the Lord, the God of Israel (1 Chr 16:4). And all the people gave a great shout of praise to the Lord, because the foundation of the house of the Lord was laid (Ezra 3:11b).

God Has a Dream about Dance

He wants dance to come back to the place where it was created to be; as part of the worship! Dance belongs to the congregation! In the Psalms, we are called to praise the name of the Lord in the service with dance and song. Hallelujah! Sing to the Lord a new song, and His praise in the assembly of saints. Let them praise His name in the dance; Let them sing praises to Him with the timbrel and harp (Ps 149:1, 3).

It is God’s statutes that dance is part of the worship. Dance was in its place in the time of the apostles and during the first centuries. Why did it depart from the congregation and why did they begin to refer to it as sin? It was because the Roman Empire started influencing the congregation strongly. It caused that they had to give up everything that had to do with the Jewish roots in order to preserve peace with the superpower Rome. The world had their unclean dances that tried to affect even the Christian congregation, and because of this during the fourth century it was already claimed: “Dance is sin!”

Rejoicing before the Lord & Ministering through dance

To dance of joy or rejoice before God is the call of every believer. When the joy of the Lord fills one's heart, the body is also carried away by this joy and wants to express the delight through movement. When the joy reaches its climax it can no longer be contained in the body, but it bursts out in movement. We all have an opportunity to do this. Unfortunately, we are bound in many ways, and therefore do not reach the point in our rejoicing where we would exceed our limits. Our so-called dignity and fear of men still keeps many believers as prisoners! It does not even always bother us that we are bound, as long as everything looks good and proper on the surface. Ministering through dance is a totally different thing than rejoicing before the Lord. The latter is included in the first, but ministering is a lot more comprehensive issue. Everyone can rejoice before God by dancing, but not everyone can carry out a holy priestly office before God’s throne in such a way that things take place in the spirit. Everyone is called to dance of joy and to rejoice before the Lord, but we are not all called to the ministry of dance. What does it mean to serve God and His purposes on earth through dance? Among other things, it means releasing God’s glory through dance. Through dance, one can intercede, do spiritual warfare, call into being and operate in the spiritual realm, and so on. God uses dance for His own purposes and according to His will.

The Dancer’s Requirement of Purity

If God has called one to the ministry of dance one's spirit witnesses about it and confirms it. Not everyone has this call, but that should not make one sad. We all have our own place, and the purpose of everything is to make Jesus and not ourselves known. Dance is a weapon of war, and it cannot be used successfully, without a pure heart. Everyone can wave a flag in praise and worship, and it is wonderful, but not everyone can be victorious in waging war against darkness by raising a flag in the name of the Lord. The authority and the anointing are the fruits of purity and sanctification. The greater the freedom one lives in, the greater the anointing one can bear. The greater the purity one lives in, the greater the anointing. God does not give His anointing to defiled vessels. One can say that one has a call from God to dance, but the first step one needs to take to move on to that call is to yield oneself to a purification and sanctification process. Everyone can dance and also call himself a dancer. If one's heart’s secret motive is that one would be something special in people´s eyes and that they would look at one in admiration, then one has not yet gone through the process of death and purification in order to be able to carry the mantle of anointing in the area of dance. It is true that God lets us experience anointing when we dance, and it may rest upon our dance even if we have not walked with Jesus for a long time. It is His grace. God wants to show us that this is not of ourselves, but of His Spirit that works through us. Carrying the anointing and experiencing the anointing are two different things. If one is truly called to the ministry of dance before God and in His kingdom, what is asked of one is separation, dying to self, exposing the hidden motives of the heart and purification. It is a process which takes time. Polishing one's character is part of it, and it always takes longer than just a few days. The maturation can take time, but one can influence it directly through one's willingness and commitment.

Ministry of Beauty and Glory

The dancer may also have a call to a so-called ministry of beauty. It means reflecting God’s beauty and splendor to people on earth. We are the image of God, and He wants to make known his beauty and loveliness. In all beauty, we reflect God’s greatness and splendor and bring Him glory. The purpose of a beautiful dance dress is never to glorify the dancer or present one’s looks. It is about glorifying the King of Kings and paying respect to him. A beautiful and anointed dance dress that an anointed dancer is wearing is like a small piece of the splendor of heaven before one's eyes. How does one respond to this, with envy and hostility? Why should one do that? Does it not lift up Jesus more if one presents something beautiful instead of something ugly? It is not about bragging or pride for which one would want to attract people’s admiration. It is about giving glory to the creator of all beautiful things! It is about reflecting, proclaiming and expressing. The glory and splendor of heaven released by his Spirit is much needed on earth. Dance releases God’s glory and presence. Used by the Holy Spirit, the dresses and flags are vessels and the dancer an instrument to glorify Jesus. Unclean dance out of the flesh neither releases the glory nor the presence of God. The motives of a dancer are tested hundreds of times and one is polished and burned in many ovens in order to remove the dross. The dancer is cleansed to carry the fire of God which comes straight from his throne. A true dancer has a mandate to carry an anointing which fulfills God’s purposes on earth. It is natural that the dancer is before the eyes of people whether one wants it or not. It is part of the ministry to be seen. Another reason it cannot be avoided is that healing and deliverance are released to people through watching the dance. The anointing can be received through the eyes, in the same way one can receive it directly into one's spirit. This is not about showing off or seeking glory to oneself but about pure respect for the King of Kings, and about reflecting his majesty, glory and beauty. If one reacts in protest and anger, one still has views and restrictions that are formed by religion. If one wants, one can be set free from them.

Prophetic Dance Schools

Did you know that, in prophet schools in the time of the Old Testament, when for example Elisa was trained, dance was part of their training? Prophets were trained to dance with different purposes.

The Prophetic Dance Schools is a concept given by God, to train people to dance in the Holy Spirit. This means that women go through a deep transformation process, to become more like Jesus, their Master. Pupils do not only learn to dance but also become delivered, healed and strongly encouraged to be just as they are before God.

The school offers both theory and practice. The word is taught in wisdom and revelation. It is deep teaching tied to revolutionary practice. Even those who think they cannot dance in the natural, start doing it in the Holy Spirit.

In the dance school pupils do not only learn different techniques, but how to worship God in spirit and truth through dance. We focus on moving in the Holy Spirit which means dancing in the anointing. Dancing in the anointing is different from just dancing beautifully. Many have gotten breakthroughs in the area of dance in their lives during these dance schools.

Sanna Enroos is an anointed dancer who has several years of experience of dance to the glory of God. She is leading the Prophetic Dance Ministry in the Power Source Church, but her ministry is not limited to Sweden. Her ministry is to raise up new dance ministries in the body of Christ.

Healing Dance Ministering

Is a new form of healing and deliverance ministry born of God. Two anointed dancers pray through movements and release the power of God during two hours. It is intercession through movement. Dance in the power of the Holy Spirit releases the anointing, healing, inner healing and deliverance to the lives of people. At the same time, God speaks prophetically to the people that are ministered to. These messages are written down and laminated as a painting which the participants get to take with them home. The service is extremely appreciated.

We receive about five to six persons at every service occasion. The participants lie on mattresses with a blanket over themselves and a pillow under their head. This is extremely relaxing, peaceful and comfortable. Read testimonies from those who have received healing dance ministering.

I feel that I have gotten new space in my innermost; it has been easy to experience the presence of the Lord. The information that I have experienced that I am pathetic and think I will never be anything was a big key for my life. In some way, I have not realized that I am thinking that way. The word of God and His thoughts flow out of my spirit and sweep away all trash.

During the dance service, I laughed from the bottom of my heart, and it felt incredible. I am sure that something y was already healed through this. "Do not fear, have no fear of man". I realized that fear has been the root of all evil in my life. It has been paralyzing my life and entangled me in a network of lies that during the dance service had to lose its grip. AMEN!
